The Optics, Imaging, and Photonics Industry in Rochester, New York

This report is part of a project to examine the role of the optics, imaging, and photonics industry in the Rochester regional economy, and to provide information for stakeholders to plan for the industry's future in the context of an increasingly globalized and competitive world economy.

Between June 2001 and December 2002, Cornell University researchers carried out a multifaceted analysis of the Rochester regional economy with an emphasis on the area's historically dominant industries: optics and imaging and its new economy variant, photonics. This research included both industry and occupational analyses based on regional economic data, interviews, focus groups, an industry survey, and a strategic planning conference with stakeholders throughout the region from the public, private, nonprofit, and education communities. This report reflects findings from the research effort and from the October planning conference. The purpose of this report is to stimulate further discussion about how the development of the photonics industry can serve as an engine of economic development and job growth in the Rochester region.

The project was funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a Community Audit Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, and the support of Cornell University's Department of City and Regional Planning.
